trusting yourself and overcoming Resistance

What would trusting yourself, being audacious and making your mark really take?

Today on the blog I’m answering another reader question. She asked:

Do you have any further recommendations of Youtube videos, or readings along the lines of support and trusting one’s own audacity and inspiration? One definitely needs a tough skin for resistance, and I’m not even fresh on the block.” – Robin N.

This is a great question Robin, but before I throw you down the rabbit hole of watching more videos or reading more blog posts, I want to ask YOU a couple of questions.

You say you want to trust your own audacity and inspiration more. That you need to be a better warrior against Resistance. But here’s what I want to know from you first:

Instead of learning to trust yourself, how about choosing yourself?

You’ll never know how much your audacious ideas and actions might impact others if you wait for the confidence to put them out there. You might be waiting a looong time. Why not give us a chance to experience your unique wisdom and creativity and let us decide for ourselves if we’re a part of your tribe?

You don’t need permission to be bold, to share, to ask for more, to LEAD. You already have a seat at the table. Don’t leave it empty. The only thing between you and your dreams is a decision to bring your voice into the conversation. Consistently. Without reservation.

When you feel Resistance, what do you want to tell it?

I pretend it’s actually a real entity…like a pest. And I have, “Oh FACK OOOFFFFF, I’m trying to do important work here” as my automated response.

80% of the time, it works 100% of the time.

What do you want to say to your Resistance? How would you respond to your inner critic/blocker if they were a person on the street trying to physically hold you back from doing something you loved or believed in?

And FYI, when it comes down to it trusting yourself it truly is a matter of getting a grip on Resistance. Sparring with those thoughts that hold you back, and winning. Every hour, every day. Making it a habit.

Let’s time travel a sec, shall we? Imagine this…
…it’s the end of your life and a close friend or one of your offspring asks you about all the things you never did. And when they ask you why, you respond, “Because of this voice in my head that told me I shouldn’t bother. That the work was too hard and that I wasn’t good enough.”

A voice in your head.

Mmm hmm.

Riiight. Sounds like a totally legit reason for unlived dreams.

I know it might seem like I’m discounting the stranglehold of Resistance, but you know what…I don’t see any other option than to take him or her down a few notches. We’re the ones that allow Resistance to have all that power in the first place.

We’re talking about negative thoughts here, people. Practically intangible little synaptic happenings in our brain that say NO NO NO.

Just writing this, I feel the gloves coming off.

Why not me?

Why not you?

Why not this idea?

Why not NOW?

Forget waiting for some magical lighting-strike-sea-change.

And no need to ask for permission – give yourself permission.

Your ideas matter. They might even be really important. You might change a person’s life with your inspired work. Heck, you might change a lot of people’s lives!

As James Altucher says, “You can outsource almost anything, but the only thing you can’t outsource are your ideas.”

I would also say that you can’t outsource your desire to make a difference. But to start making a difference you need to choose yourself first.

I know we’re all really impatient and we want to have traction on our ideas and projects like, yesterday. But that’s against the Laws of the Universe, friend. Start by taking action every day to move forward. It doesn’t matter how small. A 1% improvement from yesterday is still 1% closer to where you’re aiming.

Break your projects down into tiny little steps so you can hit the ground running, and pivot along the way based on progress and obstacles.

Taking consistent action is hands down the best way I know how to get motivated, find inspiration, and step into a leadership role. Consistent progress grows confidence. Confidence breeds generosity. Generosity is miracle-grow for your connections and work.

Now show us what you’ve got.
