ABOUT

The Republic of Freedom is a community of people who are tired of being sheep. It’s a place where we talk about the stuff that’s uncomfortable, and where we recognize that the societally-approved stories we’ve been telling ourselves are wrong (or you know….just not applicable to us).

The Republic of Freedom advocates for both livelihoods and mindsets that help us thrive
– that help us be more free in an unfree world.

Our core contributors are a diverse group of rag-tag humans with something to say. Topics you can expect to see will run the gamut from how to escape the 9-5 and work for yourself, to grappling with uncertainty and the death of the familiar, to breaking up with friends, to raging self-doubt, to dealing with comparisonitis, to making wildly unpopular decisions that you know in your heart are right for you, etc.

You know, all the shit that’s painful and confusing…until you find yourself on the other side.

Sometimes we just tell stories. Powerful stories of transformation that we hope will help you feel less alone.

Our mission is to inspire you to harness the courage and confidence
to live a more self-determined life.

Because at the very root, in that space beyond the very real barriers to financial freedom, freedom of movement, and freedom of speech, we believe that at its most primal level freedom is a state of mind. Let’s start there, and get better at being human together.

Welcome to the Republic

What do you do to pay the bills?
Business strategy for creators who live outside the Matrix and are pumped about building assets worth owning. Owner of a polar expedition company. Consultant on customer experience and revenue generation.

What do you love?
I love dogs, cheese, alpacas, waking up early, saying yes to things that scare me, travel, being alone, foraging for mushrooms, telling stories, speaking to a crowd (from a podcast or a stage), and finally knowing myself well enough to do what’s best for me, no matter what anyone says. But especially dogs and cheese.

What’s one thing you believe in that helps make the world better?
Kindness is everything.

What’s your Achilles heel?
Cheese

Favourite flavour of ice cream: Mint chocolate chip

Art in all its shapes and forms. Ideating. Learning. Warrior men. Wolf women. Definitely not being a parent but spoiling the kids of my friends. The silliness of animals. Cheese. Weird banned ads. Words that capture sentiments that can’t be translated into English.

What’s one thing you believe in that helps make the world better?
Take the path of least resistance and start the journey of getting over your bullshit drama.

What do you love?
What do I love? I love movies, I love music and I love art. I love being on a ball on my couch listening to the vinyl on the turntable while reading this weeks comics. I love wine and cheese. Helping people is my jam and I would love to make a career out of it. I love cool people and the girl I share a home with. I love Chuck Palahniuk and Philip K. Dick. Holy shit I love a lot of things. I can’t wait to love new things in the future… like Peru.

What’s one thing you believe in that helps make the world better?
Don’t Jump to conclusions and always give the benefit of the doubt. It’s something my uncle taught me when I was young and it always stuck with me.

What’s your Achilles heel?
Food… or spiders. Maybe its my inability to come up with a witty answer to that

What do you do to pay the bills?
I co-run an NGO that teaches yoga and mindfulness in prisons in South Africa. I also am a super lucky wonderwoman who owns a small property in a naice part of Cape Town and people give me cash to live in it and use my stuff!

What do you love?
I love David Bowie, even though he’s dead now and I never met him. I LOVE my dog, she smells amazing and in the morning she presses herself right into the crook of my neck and makes me feel like nothing is wrong with the world. I love eye contact, with those I reach in my work, with my friends, with strangers. I love dancing, where I truly experience the meaning of the word embodiment. There’s a place for my heart and for my fears in nature, I feel very held and replenished by being outdoors. I love loving myself, and the journey that this wondrous love is taking me on. I love any opportunity that allows for personal expansion, human connection, truthfulness and play.

What’s one thing you believe in that helps make the world better?
Connection. Dropping into be a human being first, before all the labels and the stories and the expectations. Eye contact is an underrated miracle action, seeing people and being seen is one of the most powerful thing to experience as well as to offer.

What’s your Achilles heel?
Judgement and intolerance

Favourite flavour of ice cream: Vanilla

Maisie Smith

What do you do to pay the bills?
I string together “Holy shit, I love this!” words and sentences for craft beer and cannabis brands.

What do you love?
“Hardcover books. Cheesy 80s rock ballads. Wes Anderson films. A bowl of clam chowder + a pint of beer. Neon signs. People who are kind to waiters/janitors/cashiers. Silence.

Most of all, I love rebels with a cause.”

What’s one thing you believe in that helps make the world better?
Sharing our stories, even when they’re uncool and unpolished. Connection is about being fucked up together.

What’s your Achilles heel?
I love my mattress too much

Favourite flavour of ice cream: I just found out I’m lactose intolerant. (Farewell, big block of delicious cheese. We had a good ride.) In a perfect world, I’d eat a container of French Lavender Vanilla ice cream every day.
